Léo Delibes

Clement Philibert Léo Delibes was born at Saint-Germain-du-Val, France, in February 1836. He studied at the Paris Conservatoire as a student of Adolphe Adam (composer of the ballet, Giselle). Delibes later became the accompanist and chorus master for the Théâtre-Lyrique, and then, in 1864, became second chorus master at the Paris Opéra.

Delibes is today recognized as a composer of several successful operas and ballets. The composer's ballet score for Coppélia is often praised for providing a generous amount of expressive character to produce music that is a descriptive tone poem. Many find that his music contains early impressionist elements as well. Delibes' Sylvia, which premiered in 1876, is considered Delibes' best ballet score. His oeuvre for the stage also includes many operas, including the famous Lakmé.
